Korean Baseball Team Drops to 6th Place in WBSC Rankings
The Korean baseball team has dropped two places in the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) rankings, staying at 6th place. The WBSC announced the updated men’s baseball world rankings on the 4th.
In this ranking, Taiwan rose from 5th to 3rd place (3,706 points), and Venezuela also jumped from 6th to 5th place (3,489 points), switching places with Korea. Japan maintained 1st place with 4,899 points, and Mexico maintained 2nd place (4,063 points). The United States narrowed the gap with Korea by dropping from 3rd to 4th place (3,587 points).
The WBSC rankings are calculated based on the performances in international competitions over the past four years, and each team is given points based on its performance. In particular, the 2019 Premier 12, where Korea finished runner-up, was excluded from the calculation of this ranking, which had a direct impact. This change caused Korea’s ranking to drop.
The WBSC rankings have a significant impact on seeding and grouping in international competitions. The WBSC-hosted Premier12 is the highest ranking point tournament, awarding 1,200 points to the winning team, plus an additional 180 points for the winner, for a total of 1,380 points. On the other hand, the World Baseball Classic (WBC), hosted by Major League Baseball (MLB), awards 1,000 points to the winning team, plus an additional 150 points for the winner, for a total of 1,150 points.
In addition, the WBSC awards points ranging from 300 to 600 to the winning teams in the U-12, U-15, U-18 and U-23 age-group championships. This point system has a significant impact on the development of baseball in each country and participation in international competitions.
The next rankings will be released after the U-23 Baseball World Cup, which will be held in China from September 6 to 15.
