Shane van Gisbergen missed out on the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Chase for the Championship after a dramatic finish at Daytona International Speedway, pointing to his entire season’s body of work rather than a single race as the primary cause. Entering the regular-season finale with a 31-point advantage, the Trackhouse Racing driver ultimately saw his playoff hopes dashed when Ryan Preece secured an overtime victory to claim the final postseason spot, according to Motorsport.com.

The regular-season finale at Daytona proved to be a volatile event for the driver of the No. 97 Chevrolet. Van Gisbergen captured a Stage 1 victory to pad his points cushion, but a late-race melee forced him into a spin as he attempted to avoid a final-lap crash, according to Motorsport.com.

Preece managed to salvage a minimal-damage slide across the line in eighth place during the opening stage and later charged to an overtime victory in the No. 60 RFK Racing Ford. Because Preece won the race outright, Van Gisbergen needed to finish 11th or better to protect his margin, but his race-ending spin pushed him out of contention.

Reflecting on Progress and Season-Long Struggles

Despite the bitter elimination, Van Gisbergen expressed pride in his competitive growth during his sophomore-style campaign, specifically noting his transition to ovals. According to V8 Sleuth, the New Zealand driver stated that he managed to match teammate Ross Chastain’s pace on oval tracks during several weeks of the 2026 season.

While noting that his crew has faced certain difficulties, Van Gisbergen mentioned to V8 Sleuth that he personally feels pleased with the #97 team’s ability to equal Ross. Given his immense talent on oval layouts, Van Gisbergen feels he has taken a major step forward this year by matching him across the majority of events.

Motorsport.com noted that all three Trackhouse Racing entries failed to make the 2026 Chase, marking the first time the organization has missed the playoffs entirely since expanding to a multi-car operation in 2022. Despite the team-wide performance dip, Preece offered strong praise for his competitor after the race, calling Van Gisbergen one hell of a race car driver for applying intense pressure throughout the regular season, according to Motorsport.com.

Adjusted Approach for the Remainder of 2026

With championship contention off the table as the series moves to Darlington Raceway, Van Gisbergen noted that his mindset for the final 10 races of the schedule will shift toward aggressive experimentation. According to V8 Sleuth, the freedom from playoff pressure allows his team to explore setup variations and take calculated risks.

Van Gisbergen shared with V8 Sleuth that the team can now experiment with different strategies, embrace added danger, and enjoy a relaxed, low-pressure environment. He also emphasized maintaining maximum effort to understand vehicle performance requirements on specific circuits in preparation for the upcoming year.
