Shanghai has reported an overall five-year cancer survival rate of 65.2%, a figure described as leading domestically within China. This data coincides with the release of the 2026 version of the Recommendations for Common Malignant Tumor Screening and Prevention for Residents
, developed by the Shanghai Anti-Cancer Association in collaboration with Fudan University Affiliated Cancer Hospital.
The updated guidelines were released on April 15, 2026, to mark the 32nd National Cancer Prevention and Control Week and China’s Anti-Cancer Day. The recommendations emphasize the importance of early detection, diagnosis, and treatment as primary drivers for improving patient quality of life and survival outcomes.
Updated Screening and Prevention Guidelines
The 2026 recommendations place a specific focus on the screening of prostate cancer and colorectal cancer. Beyond clinical screening, the guidelines introduce updated dietary nutrition advice aimed at reducing cancer risks.

The guidelines clarify that no single food or combination of foods can effectively prevent cancer, nor does the avoidance of specific foods eliminate cancer risk. However, the recommendations maintain that choosing healthy foods remains a powerful tool for prevention.
The 2026 dietary recommendations include the following guidelines:
- Plant-based foods should constitute more than two-thirds of the daily diet.
- Whole grains should be prioritized over refined foods.
- Red meat intake should be limited, and processed meats should be avoided.
- Alcohol consumption should be strictly limited, with a preference for total abstinence.
- Sugar intake and the consumption of high-salt and high-added-sugar foods should be reduced.
- Smoking should be controlled.
National and Regional Survival Trends
Shanghai’s 65.2% survival rate exceeds the broader national trends observed in China. According to data from the National Health Commission (NHC), China’s overall five-year cancer survival rate rose from 40.5% in 2015 to 43.7% in 2022.
The Chinese government has set a phased target through the Healthy China Action plan to increase the national overall five-year cancer survival rate to 46.6% by 2030. This plan involves a joint effort from 13 departments, including the NHC, to improve the cancer care system.
Specific cancer types in China have shown varying levels of progress. For example, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer in China has reached 83%, which is comparable to levels found in developed countries. Survival rates for esophageal cancer in China are reported to be higher than those in some developed Western countries.
Public health officials have noted a year-by-year decline in the rates of liver, gastric, and esophageal cancers, which are highly prevalent within the Chinese population. These improvements are attributed to the steady development of cancer prevention and treatment technologies, some of which are now close to or have reached international advanced levels.
