Shanghai Electric is highlighting localized green practices across its factories and project sites to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22, 2026. The company’s initiative focuses on how industrial projects can reduce environmental impact and support biodiversity through site-specific actions.
The theme for this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity is “Acting locally for global impact.” This theme calls for global sustainability commitments to be translated into local action. For industrial enterprises, the company noted that biodiversity protection begins with practical steps at the project and site levels, such as the implementation of stronger environmental management and the use of cleaner energy.
The Mianchuan Wind Power Project
A primary example of this localized approach is the Mianchuan Wind Power Project, located in China’s Yangtze River basin. The project is recognized as the first large-scale “Zero-Carbon Island” in the region to be powered by renewable energy.
The project utilizes 18 EW5.6N-202 wind turbines that were custom-designed by the Shanghai Electric Wind Power Group to accommodate local island conditions. These turbines are integrated with photovoltaics and energy storage to form a clean microgrid.
The Mianchuan project was fully connected to the power grid in May 2025 and became commercially operational in September 2025.
Environmental and Economic Impact
The Mianchuan microgrid generates 244 million kWh of electricity annually. This output provides power to 32,000 residents and delivers more than 200 million kWh of green electricity to areas beyond the island.
The project’s environmental contributions include the saving of 96,000 tons of standard coal and a reduction in CO2 emissions by 240,000 tons per year.
In addition to environmental benefits, the project has created 500 local jobs. It contributes an annual output value of 200 million yuan and generates 15 million yuan, approximately USD 2.2 million, in taxes and profits.
Shanghai Electric is also applying these localized green practices to its projects in Malaysia, demonstrating the application of these methods across different operating environments.
