Nicki Minaj, Shannon Sharpe Address “Banned From NO” Diss
Updated June 14, 2025
Lil Wayne’s recent album, Tha Carter VI, continues to generate buzz. A bonus track, “Banned From NO,” features a verse by nicki Minaj that name-drops Shannon Sharpe, among others. The line prompted a response from the former NFL star and current ESPN commentator.
In the song, Minaj raps, ”‘Bout to cop you slides, all you do is flip-flop/ If I send a pic of Shannon, you ain’t that Sharpe.” Sharpe addressed the perceived diss on a recent episode of Nightcap, explaining the situation.
Sharpe clarified that his comment was directed at Nikki Haley, referencing a February tweet where he questioned Haley’s remarks about the Black community. “I was talking about Nikki Haley,” Sharpe said. ”Nikki Haley said it’s really great for everybody of Black America, and I was like … ‘When has it ever been great?’”
Minaj confirmed Sharpe’s tweet was the source of her displeasure, tweeting after the song’s release, “Yeah nia you thoght I forgot that ‘Nicki who’ sht you did?”
Sharpe directly addressed minaj, emphasizing his respect for her. “Nicki, I was not trying to be disrespectful. Of course, I know who you are,” he said.”I would be remiss to say that I thought you knew who I was, or that you knew anything about Club Shay Shay. I’m not that arrogant.”
Nicki, I apologize. I meant no disrespect. You’ll always have an open invitation if you ever want to come sit down and have a conversation. Even if you just want to have a private conversation on the phone or something. It won’t go any further between you and I.
In “Banned From NO,” Minaj also takes aim at the NFL and Jay-Z, rapping, “NFL, fire some ni**as and then call us!” This line appears to stem from the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime show in New Orleans, where Lil Wayne reportedly felt snubbed. Jay-Z’s involvement wiht the NFL, particularly the halftime show, led to speculation that Minaj’s lyrics were directed at him.
