Canada’s Denis Shapovalov has advanced to the second round of the BMW Open in Munich after defeating eighth-seeded Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands on April 14, 2026.

Shapovalov secured the victory with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. The win ensures that two Canadians have progressed into the Round of 16 at the ATP 500 clay-court tournament, as Shapovalov joins fellow countryman Gabriel Diallo in the next stage of the competition.

Match Analysis and Performance

The unseeded Shapovalov managed to convert four of his 12 break-point opportunities during the match. While he experienced some difficulties with his first serve, recording six double faults alongside three aces, he remained competitive by winning 75 per cent of the points on his second serve.

Shapovalov, a native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, clinched the match with a dominant performance in the third set. During the final set, he recorded 13 winners and did not face a single break point.

Season Context and Rankings

The 26-year-old Canadian entered the BMW Open ranked 39th in the world. With this victory over Griekspoor, Shapovalov has improved his match record for the current season to 7-7.

Season Context and Rankings

Meanwhile, Gabriel Diallo also advanced through the first round on April 13, 2026. Diallo, who is ranked No. 37 on the ATP Tour, defeated Ukrainian qualifier Vitaliy Sachko in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-2.

Diallo’s performance was marked by a strong defensive game, as he was not broken throughout the match and fended off all five of Sachko’s break-point attempts. This win improved Diallo’s season record to 6-10.

Upcoming Matchups

Shapovalov’s next opponent will be determined by the outcome of a match between Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas and Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan.

Gabriel Diallo faces a more challenging path in the second round. He is scheduled to play against the top seed of the tournament, Alexander Zverev of Germany.

Zverev earned his spot in the second round by defeating Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2).
