Search Underway for Missing Swimmer off Monterey Coast,‍ Shark sighting‍ Reported


A⁣ large-scale search‍ is underway ⁢off the‍ coast of Monterey, California, after​ a 55-year-old ‍woman went missing while swimming with a group on Monday, December 18, 2023. The search was initiated after a witness reported seeing a shark breach the water with​ what appeared to be a human body in its mouth, according to authorities.

While authorities have confirmed reports of a shark sighting in​ the area, Deputy ⁣Anderson emphasized that there is currently no definitive evidence to confirm the missing‍ swimmer was attacked by a shark. SFGate reported this clarification.

Search Efforts

Multiple agencies are involved in the search, including the Pacific Grove Police Department, Monterey ⁤County Fire Department, U.S.‌ Coast guard, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, and California state Parks. The U.S.⁣ Coast Guard deployed a⁢ helicopter from Air Station San Francisco and a small boat from its Monterey station to aid in the‍ search on Monday, according‍ to ⁣U.S. ‍Coast Guard spokesperson Chris Sappey.
