San Jose Sharks prospect Sam Dickinson capped off his junior hockey career with a ⁢stellar performance, leading the‍ London Knights to a 4-1 victory ‍over the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Memorial Cup final Sunday in rimouski, Quebec. Dickinson, ‍a defenseman, tallied three assists, two in the ⁤second period, securing the Knights’⁢ championship win.

Dickinson, drafted 11th ‌overall by the Sharks in⁤ 2024, recorded six assists in five Memorial Cup games, earning him all-tournament honors. This victory served as redemption for the Knights, who lost by ‌a single goal in the previous year’s final to the Saginaw Spirit.

While the Memorial Cup MVP award went to Easton Cowan, another Toronto Maple Leafs⁤ prospect, Dickinson’s contributions ⁢were undeniable.Fellow Sharks prospect Kasper Halttunen also played⁢ a key role, scoring ‌two goals and ‌adding two assists during the tournament.

Halttunen, selected 36th overall in 2023, was named the Ontario Hockey League’s playoff MVP after amassing 21⁣ points ⁣in 17 games, helping London secure the league title and a‌ spot in the Memorial cup.He had nine ⁣goals in five⁢ games during london’s OHL championship series win over the Oshawa Generals.

Halttunen, who will turn 20 on June 7,is expected to join the Sharks or ‌the AHL’s ⁣Barracuda next season. Dickinson, who turns 19 on the same ‌day, could either join the‌ Sharks ⁢or ‍return to London‍ for another OHL season. League rules stipulate that ‍Canadian or American players from major junior hockey must be ‌20 years old by Dec. 31 to⁢ be eligible for ‍the AHL.

However, Dickinson appears poised to make the jump to the NHL. At 6-foot-3 and 210 ⁣pounds, he anchored London’s top defensive pairing⁤ and played in all ‌key ‍situations. named ⁢the OHL’s Defenseman of the Year, ‍Dickinson ⁤showcased his elite skating ⁢and offensive skills, racking up 91 points ⁢in 55 ‌regular-season games ‍and 31 points in 17 OHL playoff games.

Marc ‌Denis, an analyst for‌ RDS,⁤ remarked on TSN’s broadcast that Dickinson is the closest player to the ‌NHL he has seen in⁢ the tournament. He added that Dickinson is mature, ⁤says and does the right things,‌ which is important for a defenseman.

The Sharks currently have six defensemen signed to one-way contracts for the upcoming season, including Shakir Mukhamadullin. Other signed players include marc-edouard vlasic, Mario Ferraro, henry Thrun, Timothy Liljegren, and‌ Vincent Desharnais. Luca Cagnoni, Jack Thompson, and Lucas Carlsson also saw ice time with the Sharks this season.

Despite the Sharks’ existing defensive lineup, Dickinson’s combination of size and offensive⁤ talent⁤ sets him apart. To secure a spot on the NHL roster, he will need to demonstrate his defensive⁤ capabilities.⁣ The Sharks are‌ likely to carry seven or eight defensemen to start ⁤the season.

Frankie Corrado, a TSN analyst, believes Dickinson⁤ is ready for⁢ the NHL, stating that he will look good in ⁢teal and white next ‍season‌ in San Jose.

What’s next

As⁢ the offseason progresses, the Sharks will evaluate Dickinson’s readiness for the NHL. His⁤ performance in training camp will likely determine weather he starts‍ the season in San⁣ Jose or returns to ⁤London for another year of ⁤junior hockey. The team ‌will be looking to ⁢see if his offensive skills translate to the ⁢professional level and if he can be a reliable defender.
