The Transition to NXT 2.0
Michaels provided insight into the controversial shift from the Black and Gold
era of NXT to the NXT 2.0 iteration. According to reporting from Wrestlsphere, the brand experienced a significant identity shift in September 2021.

Prior to this change, specifically around September 2019, NXT had evolved beyond a developmental territory to become a third brand
alongside Raw, and SmackDown. During this period, the brand featured a USA Network television deal and was characterized by a roster of world-class talent from the United States independent circuit and international markets.
Key figures of the Black and Gold era included NXT Champion Adam Cole and the Undisputed Era, while Shayna Baszler held a 416-day reign as NXT Women’s Champion before being challenged by Rhea Ripley.
However, by September 2021, the brand was moved back to Tuesday nights following 18 months of competition against AEW Dynamite in the Wednesday Night Wars
. This transition, known as NXT 2.0, marked a return to a developmental focus, prioritizing Performance Center rookies over established independent stars.
The shift also involved significant personnel changes, including the removal of William Regal from his duties as on-screen General Manager and backstage mentor by Vince McMahon.
WrestleMania 25 and Career Reflections
Beyond his executive role, Michaels revealed new information regarding his professional wrestling matches. As reported by Ringside News, Michaels disclosed that his classic match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania 25 lasted longer than had been originally planned.
Michaels also reflected on the different stages of his performing career. In a statement shared on April 9, 2026, Michaels explained that he believes the 2000s represented his best era in WWE from a professional standpoint, despite the prominence of his work in the 1990s.
These reflections come as part of a broader look at his legacy, which includes his transition from a high-profile performer known for his Sweet Chin Music
finisher to a mentor and booker for the current generation of WWE talent.
Legacy and Mentorship
Now serving as a sports entertainment sensei for the NXT locker room, Michaels has focused on moulding the new generation of superstars. His current role involves balancing the needs of a youthful roster while applying the lessons learned from his time as a two-time WWE Hall of Famer.
The discussion with Hernandez further explored the duality of Michaels’ career, contrasting his persona in the 1990s—marked by a significant ego—with his current role as a backstage leader and mentor.
This evolution is a central theme of his new documentary, which examines the transformation of his professional and personal identity over several decades in the industry.
