Shawn Michaels has revealed that WWE NXT had intended to center its brand around Je’Von Evans for a full year before the wrestler was called up to the main roster.
Speaking on the Ringer Wrestling Show on April 10, 2026, Michaels explained that he attempted to delay Evans’ transition to the main roster to allow for further development within the developmental system.
The move comes as part of a broader shift of talent from NXT to the main roster earlier in 2026, which also saw the debuts of Oba Femi and Trick Williams.
Plans for Je’Von Evans in NXT
Evans had established himself as a standout prospect in 2025 and further solidified his position by winning the Iron Survivor Challenge at Deadline. According to Michaels, this victory was meant to be the catalyst for a long-term push within NXT.
Michaels stated that the internal model for the brand was to build around Evans for the following year. However, the call-up to the main roster occurred only one month after Evans won the Iron Survivor Challenge.
Well not forever because you’re not doing a good job if you’ve got them forever. Je’von was somebody I had, I was begging for ‘can we just keep him another six months’, because from an NXT standpoint we were going to build around Je’von for the next year, and that was kind of the model, then they’re like ‘no we’re taking him too’. I was like ‘oh’.

Michaels noted that while the ultimate goal of NXT is to prepare talent for the main roster, the timing of Evans’ departure was faster than he had anticipated.
Negotiations Over the Call-Up Timeline
The WWE legend detailed his efforts to negotiate a longer stay for Evans in the developmental brand. Michaels revealed that he pushed back against the decision to move Evans up immediately, suggesting multiple alternative timelines to WWE leadership.
Michaels first requested that Evans remain in NXT for an additional six months. When that request was denied, he attempted to negotiate for a shorter three-month extension, which was also rejected by the company’s brass.
Michaels described the exchange as a series of denials, noting that he eventually accepted the decision once it became clear that the main roster call-up was non-negotiable.
Impact on the NXT Roster
The departure of top prospects like Evans is often a complex transition for the developmental system. While the system is designed to produce stars for the main event scene, the sudden removal of key talent can create voids in the NXT roster.
The movement of Evans, along with Trick Williams and Oba Femi, represents a significant loss of established momentum for the NXT brand. Michaels emphasized that while he wanted more time with Evans to execute his specific vision, he acknowledged that keeping talent in NXT indefinitely would be a failure of the brand’s purpose.
Evans now joins the main roster as part of a new wave of talent intended to bolster the competitive environment of WWE’s primary programming.
