Thick black smoke hung heavy over the area on a Saturday afternoon as a shed fire tore through an animal enclosure in the Gützkow district of Breechen, drawing alarm from residents. The blaze gutted a wooden structure primarily utilized for housing animal feed and bedding.
Flames Consume Gützkow Feed Shed
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after the fire broke out. Due to a shorter travel distance, the Jarmen fire brigade arrived first, according to Wehrführer Gerhard Vockelmann in reports from Nordkurier.
Rapid Attack Prevents Wider Disaster
When the Jarmener crew reached the property, the shed was already burning fiercely. Firefighters threw everything at the blaze, successfully stopping the flames from leaping to an adjacent outbuilding, stored firewood, and a stack of tires.
Yet, the rapid response came too late for the animals inside. Firefighters could not save eight rabbits housed in an immediately adjoining stable featuring multiple boxes. The sheer, intense heat also melted the plastic shell of another nearby shelter.
A woman suffered a minor hand injury attempting to beat back the flames herself before professionals arrived. She ultimately declined medical treatment at the scene.
Logistical Hurdles on Narrow Access Routes
Tackling the blaze demanded aggressive maneuvers against difficult geography. The burning property sat buried in the third row of buildings, entirely hidden from the main village street and accessible only by a narrow dead-end road featuring a sharp 90-degree bend.
The tight approach squeezed out any maneuvering room for large emergency vehicles. Jarmens deployment featured four vehicles and 16 personnel, while Gützkow colleagues sent two trucks and eight firefighters to handle subsequent overhaul work.
Pond Water Supply Powers Final Overhaul
Once fire crews exhausted their initial on-board tanks, water shortages threatened the operation. Gützkow firefighters solved the crisis by laying a hose line stretching several hundred meters to the southern end of the village.
Crews tapped a local pond as a draft source, pumping a continuous stream to feed the attack lines. Police officers stationed at the location calculated the total property damage at approximately 5,000 euros.
