Liam Lindsay delivered a stunning performance to inspire Preston North End to a 3-2 victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
The Preston defender scored twice in the first 20 minutes, heading in Jordan Thompson’s corner in the fifth minute and then glancing home Alfie Devine’s corner from the opposite side in the 20th minute to give his side a 2-0 lead.
Lindsay’s brace marked the first time he had scored two goals in a single match during his career, having previously managed only one goal in his previous 89 Championship appearances.
Sheffield United fought back in the second half with Gustavo Hamer converting a penalty in the 71st minute after Femi Seriki was tripped by Andrija Vukcevic, and Patrick Bamford adding a second goal in the 82nd minute.
However, Lewis Dobbin restored Preston’s two-goal cushion with a goal in the 76th minute, finishing off a swift counter-attack to seal the win for the visitors.
The result moved Preston North End back into the top half of the Championship table, while Sheffield United suffered their 10th defeat of the season at Bramall Lane, leaving them in 15th place with only one match remaining.
Prior to the match, the two teams had been sitting side-by-side in the standings after contrasting seasons. Preston had been fourth in mid-January but had won only three of their previous 18 games, while Sheffield United’s campaign had been hampered by 11 defeats in their first 14 matches.
For Lindsay, the goals represented a significant breakthrough after a prolonged scoring drought, with his previous Championship goal coming in April 2025.
