Shehbaz Directs Easy Loans for Pakistani Farmers
Pakistan’s Agricultural Renaissance: Prime Minister Directs Policy for Farmer Empowerment and Agri-Financing
Islamabad, Pakistan – In a significant move towards revitalizing the nation’s agricultural backbone, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the relevant authorities to present a comprehensive policy framework by the end of this month for the provision of easy loans to small and medium-scale farmers. this directive underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering agricultural advancement, enhancing farmer prosperity, and boosting Pakistan’s export potential.
The Prime Minister, chairing a crucial review meeting on agricultural development and agri-financing, emphasized the need for a modern and accessible agri-financing system. He specifically called for prioritizing farmers with landholdings of less than 12 acres, ensuring that these vital contributors to the food chain receive the necessary support to thrive. This focus on smallholder farmers is a strategic imperative, recognizing their critical role in food security and rural economic stability.
This initiative builds upon the Prime Minister’s earlier pronouncements in June, where he reiterated the government’s dedication to reducing the tax burden on the agriculture sector and introducing lasting reforms. The current directive signals a tangible step towards translating these commitments into actionable policies.
The policy framework is expected to encompass a multi-faceted approach, including facilitating access to modern agricultural equipment,high-quality seeds, and advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence for improved water management. furthermore, the government aims to bolster on-farm small industries, empowering farmers to process their produce into value-added, exportable goods. This strategic vision extends to providing farmers with the necessary training and facilities to enhance their capacity for increasing exports through effective post-harvest processing.
The meeting was attended by a high-level delegation, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Ministers Ahad Khan Cheema and Rana Tanveer Hussain, Advisor to the Prime Minister Muhammad Ali, Ministers of State Bilal Azhar Kiani and Abdul Rehman Kanju, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, Governor State Bank Jameel Ahmed, and Chief Coordinator Musharraf Zaidi, among other senior officials. This broad participation highlights the cross-governmental commitment to agricultural reform.
The Prime Minister articulated a clear vision: “The development of Pakistan is linked to the progress of the agriculture sector and value addition of the agri-products.” This statement encapsulates the understanding that a robust agricultural sector is not merely about food production but is a cornerstone of national economic progress and global competitiveness.
This policy push follows earlier announcements, including the unveiling of a scheme for soft agricultural loans under a Public Private Partnership model earlier this month, and the Prime Minister’s March vow to achieve food self-sufficiency and boost farm exports through a collaborative effort between federal and provincial governments to provide reasonably priced inputs.
As Pakistan embarks on this enterprising agricultural conversion, the forthcoming policy framework for easy farmer loans and modernized agri-financing is poised to be a cornerstone of this new era. It represents a forward-looking strategy that not only addresses immediate needs but also lays the groundwork for a sustainable, prosperous, and globally competitive agricultural sector for generations to come.
