Mexican President Urges ⁢No Immigration Enforcement at Gold Cup Soccer match

Mexican⁣ President‌ Claudia Sheinbaum has called on U.S. authorities ‌to refrain from immigration enforcement actions targeting fans attending Saturday’s Gold Cup soccer match in Inglewood, California. Mexico is scheduled⁣ to⁣ face the Dominican Republic at SoFi Stadium.

Sheinbaum’s plea‍ follows recent immigration raids in the los Angeles area, which targeted undocumented migrants. These⁣ actions, reminiscent of policies under the Trump governance, have sparked protests in‍ major cities.

U.S. Customs and Border ⁣Protection (CBP) had previously posted on⁣ social media about being present at ‌Club World Cup matches, a prelude to next year’s World cup,‍ before deleting the post.

“We don’t believe that ‌at any soccer ⁢match there will be any [immigration] action,” sheinbaum said during a news conference. “We call for none to be taken by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”

When asked⁣ if she would still advise fans to attend the game, Sheinbaum highlighted that Mexican consulates in the U.S. have established protocols ⁢to aid citizens who might⁢ potentially be detained.”This campaign we are carrying out‌ through the consulates ⁢will provide all the facts on what to do if detained, as well as ongoing contact with families,” she said.

In response to the social media⁤ post, CBP stated that it regularly‌ provides security at major sporting events. “U.S.Customs and Border Protection ⁤is committed to⁢ working with our local and federal⁤ partners to ensure the FIFA Club World Cup 25 is safe for everyone ⁢involved, as we do with every major sporting event, including the Super Bowl. Our mission ⁣remains‍ unchanged,” the agency told The Associated Press.

Sheinbaum also addressed images circulating on social media showing demonstrators in Los Angeles holding Mexican flags, dismissing them as “potential provocations.” She added, “Mexico will‌ always promote peace,” emphasizing that Mexican nationals in the U.S. are hardworking individuals who do not seek to incite violence.

mexican national team matches⁤ typically draw large crowds in ⁤Southern California. In March, over 50,000 fans attended a Nations League ‍semifinal against Canada.

Due to safety concerns, the Mexican national team changed hotels earlier ‍in the week, moving from downtown Los Angeles to Long Beach.

Mexico’s next two Concacaf Gold Cup group stage matches will be held in Arlington, Texas, and⁢ Las Vegas. The‌ tournament ⁢also includes Central American countries with notable migrant populations in the United ⁤States. The focus remains on ensuring fan safety ⁣and preventing‌ any potential immigration enforcement ⁤actions ‍at these events.
