Cincinnati — Bengals’ first-round⁤ pick ⁢Shemar Stewart, a defensive end, was⁣ absent from the team’s mandatory⁣ minicamp thursday due to an ongoing ⁢contract dispute. ⁣The rookie has yet⁢ to⁣ participate in⁤ any offseason workouts as‌ the ⁢team and his representatives negotiate. The ⁤primary sticking point reportedly involves differing interpretations⁤ of contract⁣ language that could impact the amount⁢ of guaranteed ‍money.

Coach Zac Taylor acknowledged Stewart’s ⁤absence after the final minicamp session.‍ “He wasn’t here today, ‍so we just focused on the⁤ guys that were here,” Taylor said.

Despite the‌ contract impasse, Taylor indicated he’s had productive ‌conversations with Stewart. The coach noted the rookie has attended meetings and displayed a positive attitude ‌while⁣ learning the playbook.

Earlier in the week, Stewart commented on the situation, stating he wasn’t seeking anything unprecedented compared to previous‌ Bengals draftees.⁢ He suggested the team was prioritizing winning an argument over winning games. Taylor said he and Stewart had “good communication” following ⁣those remarks.

stewart isn’t the only Bengals ‌pass‌ rusher facing contract issues. Trey Hendrickson, a four-time Pro Bowler, also skipped the mandatory ⁣minicamp as he pursues a⁤ long-term contract extension. Hendrickson has stated he doesn’t intend‍ to play under the final year of his current‌ deal.

Bengals center ted Karras addressed the contract situations, emphasizing team unity. “The main thing I⁣ want to ‍say is I don’t think, to⁤ either of our defensive ends,⁣ that there’s not any harboring resentment in this⁢ locker room to them,” Karras said. “I really hope that ⁣both camps can figure this out ⁤as we have a‌ really good team. we’ve had a super⁢ productive spring, and you just don’t want⁢ this to carry over into the summer.” The Bengals hope to resolve the ⁤contract dispute and get Stewart on‌ the ⁢field soon, adding depth to‍ their⁢ defensive ⁤line and bolstering their pass rush capabilities.

What’s next

The Bengals will break for the ⁣summer before training camp begins in late July. the team hopes to have both Stewart and ⁣Hendrickson under contract before the start of training camp.
