Shenzhen National Gene Bank participated in launching two new national standards_Eastern Fortune Network

September 25, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Entertainment

my country’s first national standard for animal sample preservation (GB/Z 44314-2024 “Preservation of Biotechnology Biological Samples – Requirements for the Preservation of Animal Biological Samples”) and the first national standard in the field of plant sample preservation (GB/Z 44313-2024 “Preservation of Biotechnology Biological Samples – Requirements for the Preservation of Plant Biological Samples for Research and Development Purposes”) were officially released recently. Both standards were jointly initiated by the Shenzhen National Gene Bank and relevant units.

It is understood that biological resource preservation is not only crucial to biodiversity conservation, but also contributes to the rapid development of scientific research and the improvement of medical care. Biological resource banks are important carriers for biological resource preservation. Formulating unified resource bank standards and regulating the operation of resource banks can ensure important indicators such as sample quality, visibility and repeatability, and can ensure the increasing complexity/precision of biological resources in application fields to the greatest extent.

The national standard for the preservation of plant biological specimens aims to help global plant specimen resource centers strengthen sample and data exchanges and achieve high-quality management through the promotion of unified collection and processing methods, and to promote the subsequent benefit sharing through the sharing of plant biological resources.

The formulation and implementation of this standard will help manage plant biological sample resources, ensure the quality of plant samples and related data, improve the compatibility and operability of plant biological data, and provide a basis for efficient sample and data sharing.

The national standard for animal sample preservation specifies the requirements for the collection, receipt, preparation, preservation, transportation, storage, distribution, destruction and disposal of animal biological samples (excluding humans). Such resources include solid tissue samples, liquids and related cells, excreta and related data. It is applicable to biological samples or (and) related data for research and development, and to biological molecules obtained from biological samples, such as nucleic acids, proteins and metabolites.

The formulation and implementation of this standard will guide relevant institutions to efficiently collect and preserve samples and data of animal tissues, blood, body fluids, cells, excrement, etc., and assist in the preservation of animal genetic resources and related research.

Experts said that the official release of these two national standards will help improve the preservation quality of animal and plant biological samples, increase the sample sharing rate of biological sample preservation institutions, assist in the protection and application of biodiversity, and promote the realization of the beautiful vision proposed in the Convention on Biological Diversity of “achieving sustainable use of biodiversity and benefit sharing, and achieving harmonious coexistence between man and nature by 2050.”

Since its establishment, the Shenzhen National Gene Bank has used cutting-edge technologies in life sciences and bioinformatics data sciences to cooperate with leading institutions in the industry and domestic and foreign standardization organizations to jointly establish international and domestic standards for samples, data, and technology, leading the industry to develop in an orderly manner. To date, the Shenzhen National Gene Bank has participated in the drafting and promulgation of 101 standards, including 2 international standards, 1 regional standard, 19 national standards, 11 local standards, 32 group standards, and 36 enterprise standards, filling many gaps in the industry.
