The series introduces Amelia (Blu Hunt), a young Native American woman who arrives in london claiming Holmes is her father and seeking answers about her mother’s murder.
David Thewlis portrays this “classic Sherlock,” now older and more set in his ways. According to writer and executive producer, Brendan Foley, taking on such a well-known character is a challenge. He noted the existence of manny Sherlock Holmes iterations and the need to appeal to both purists and casual viewers.
Thewlis’ Sherlock is set to be disrupted by Amelia. Her arrival forces him to confront emotions,something the famously logical detective avoids.thewlis said Holmes may have experimented with human emotion in the past, with disastrous results. Writer and executive producer, Scott Goldstein, added that this Sherlock is not the young, rule-breaking version, but one who has seen it all and is now facing a changing world.
The decision to make Holmes’s offspring a daughter was intentional. Executive producer Karine Martin said a daughter presents a unique challenge for Sherlock. Amelia’s American sensibility and different cultural background clash with his ordered world.
Martin acknowledged concerns about “Sherlock fatigue,” given the numerous adaptations. Though, she believes the father-daughter dynamic and the exploration of Native American culture set this series apart. Hunt said she appreciated the chance to portray a character who brings new skills and perspectives to the Holmesian universe.
Hunt also spoke about her co-star, David Thewlis. She called him the show’s foundation, praising his dedication to the role. She added that Holmes is an archetypal character, echoed in figures like Don draper and tony Soprano – brilliant but flawed men struggling with themselves and their relationships.
Hunt said she hopes her character will realize she is more like Sherlock than she initially believes. She also noted that Amelia’s background gives her advantages in investigations, allowing her to connect with people in ways Sherlock cannot.
Beyond the series, Hunt has been working on a personal film project, “Replay,” which she self-financed. She described it as a story inspired by her own experiences and creative control.
