Shi Yuqi’s Shocking Exit: China Open Badminton Championships Witness Major Upset as Liang Wang Duo Falls
China Open Badminton: Shi Yuqi and Liang Wang Combination Eliminated
China News Service, Beijing, September 19th. The 2024 China Open Badminton Championships held in Changzhou, Jiangsu, witnessed a shocking defeat for the world’s number one Chinese men’s singles player Shi Yuqi. He lost 0:2 to Indonesian player Ginting and missed the quarterfinals. The Paris Olympic Games runner-up combination Liang Weikeng/Wang Chang also failed to advance after losing 1:2 to the Indonesian combination Fikri/Martin.
Shi Yuqi, the men’s singles top seed, has been struggling with poor form recently. Despite his previous victories over Ginting, he was defeated in two games with scores of 11:21 and 8:21, with the match lasting only 28 minutes. His performance was affected by his poor offensive and defensive displays, and he applied for a medical timeout in the second game.
Shi Yuqi’s recent performances have been underwhelming. After losing to Thai star Kunlavut Khan in the men’s singles quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics, he was eliminated in the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the Japan Open and Korea Open, respectively. His current state of mind and body has raised concerns about his future plans. “I don’t know what to do now, I feel blank and confused, and I am thinking whether to continue playing or to end it,” he said.
The China Open marked Liang Weiheng/Wang Chang’s first appearance after the Paris Olympics. As the top seed, the Liang-Wang combination lost the first game 19:21 but adjusted their strategy in time to win the second game 21:18. However, they made several mistakes in serving and receiving in the deciding game, exposing their physical shortcomings, and ultimately lost 17:21.
In the post-match interview, the duo acknowledged that they lacked systematic training after the Olympics and would need time to readjust their condition. They expressed their determination to gradually recover in subsequent competitions and strive to make phased progress.
Other notable matches saw Weng Hongyang and Lei Lanxi advancing to the men’s singles quarterfinals, while Wang Zhiyi and Gao Fangjie secured their spots in the women’s singles quarterfinals. The national badminton mixed doubles combination of Feng Yanzhe/Huang Dongping and Cheng Xing/Zhang Chi also advanced, along with the women’s doubles combinations of Liu Shengshu/Tan Ning, Li Yijing/Luo Xumin, Jia Yifan/Zheng Yu, and Li Wenmei/Zhang Shuxian. He Jiting/Ren Xiangyu became the only national badminton men’s doubles “seedling” to advance.
The quarter-finals of each event are scheduled to take place on the 20th.
