Shield Saga: How Al-Ahly’s Dominance is Shaking Up the League
Al-Ahly to Receive League Shield After Delay
A source in the Egyptian Football Clubs Association revealed that the delay in Al-Ahly receiving the league shield came at the club’s request after coach Marcel Kohler traveled on holiday.
Al-Ahly on Tuesday announced the approval of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to hand the Egyptian League Shield to the team following Saturday’s match between Kenya’s Gormahia in the African Champions League.
Al-Ahly won the Egyptian league title for the second season in a row after a strong competition with Pyramids, but did not receive the shield after the last match in the competition against Modern Sport.
A source from the club association told Al Arabiya.net: The reason for the delay in getting the league shield was Al-Ahly, because its coach Marcel Kohler traveled on vacation before the end of the league, so Al-Ahly wanted to postpone celebrating the title.
He added: Al-Ahly is the one who requested to get the league shield to celebrate it with their fans in the Champions League match against Gormahia, and we had no problem with that.
The source concluded: We will make an amendment to the regulations next season to establish a clear system for the process of handing over the league shield to the champion team, so that each team does not choose the date of handing over the shield accordingly to their will.
