Shields and Cyborg Feud Continues with Sparring Claims
The rivalry between boxing champion Claressa Shields and MMA star Cris Cyborg has escalated, with both fighters exchanging pointed remarks about their respective careers and a past sparring session. The exchange highlights the ongoing tension between the two combat sports icons.
Cyborg, a champion in multiple MMA organizations and a boxer with five wins since 2022, recently took to social media to jab at Shields’ knockout record. She currently has more knockouts than Shields.
Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and world champion in multiple weight classes, responded to Cyborg’s comments during an interview. She dismissed Cyborg’s accomplishments in boxing, saying her opponent is not a world champion.
“She’s fighting bums in boxing and she’s yelling out, ‘Oh, I’ve got more knockouts than Claressa,'” Shields said. “Yeah, fighting against bums. She’ll never be able to get in the ring with a world champion and beat them.”
The two fighters have a history of challenging each other across MMA and boxing. While a formal fight has never materialized, thay did spar in the past. Shields shared her account of their sparring session, claiming she got the better of Cyborg.
Shields alleged that Cyborg was envious and plotting against her. She also claimed that Cyborg was upset that she couldn’t beat her in a fight.
“She seems to be on drugs,” Shields said. “I f—ed her up in sparring.2019 or 2018, I did it jetlagged off of a plane… I flew to LA, sparred against Cris Cyborg and we were supposed to go for six rounds but I only kicked her ass for four because she was about to cry. So we didn’t do the last two. That’s the real deal.We never sparred or trained again after that.”
Weight differences could also pose a challenge. Cyborg typically fights at 145 pounds, while Shields competes between 160 and 175 pounds.
What’s next
Whether this renewed war of words will translate into a future fight remains to be seen. The weight difference and the fighters’ commitments to their respective sports present significant hurdles.
