Shin Bon-ki, an infield utility player who played for Lotte and KT, has announced his retirement from active duty.
KT’s infielder Shin Bon-ki has retired from professional baseball after 13 years. The team announced his decision on the 12th, encouraging fans to support his future endeavors.
Shin graduated from Dong-A University and began his career with the Lotte Giants. He was drafted as the 14th overall pick in the 2012 Rookie Draft. During his time with Lotte, he helped the team reach the semi-playoffs in 2017. In 2020, he was traded to KT Wiz and made a significant impact by hitting a solo home run in the 5th inning of Game 4 in the 2021 Korean Series, leading to the team’s victory.
Over his career, Shin played 1,000 games, achieving 541 hits, 31 home runs, 260 RBIs, and a .247 batting average. He excelled as an infield utility player, covering second base, third base, and shortstop.
Off the field, Shin Bon-ki is known for his philanthropy. He began donating while earning minimum wage. His community service earned him the KBO Love Golden Glove Award in 2017.
Shin expressed gratitude to the KT front office, coaches, and his family, who supported him throughout his career. He will hold a retirement ceremony next season.
