For 25 years, the Shinawatra family has exerted an unparalleled influence on Thai politics, navigating coups, legal challenges, and persistent opposition from the country’s traditional power structures. This influence was underscored on August 22, 2025, with the Bangkok court’s acquittal of 76-year-old Thaksin Shinawatra on charges of violating Thailand’s strict lese-majeste laws - laws protecting the monarchy from insult – stemming from a decade-old interview with South Korean media.
From Police Officer to prime Minister: The Rise of Thaksin
Thaksin Shinawatra’s journey to political prominence began with a career in law enforcement before he transitioned into the world of telecommunications, amassing a considerable fortune. In 2001,he launched the Thai Rak Thai (Thais Love Thais) party, campaigning on a platform of utilizing his buisness acumen to improve the lives of Thailand’s rural population. This message resonated deeply, earning him the premiership and the distinction of being the first democratically elected Thai prime minister to complete a full term.
His populist policies, including direct cash injections to rural communities, proved immensely popular, notably in the wake of the Asian financial crisis. He secured a landslide re-election, leading the first Thai party to achieve an outright majority in parliament. though, this success was shadowed by allegations of corruption and mounting protests, culminating in a military coup in September 2006 while he was traveling abroad.
Exile and enduring Influence
Following the coup, Thaksin’s assets were frozen, but he remarkably purchased Manchester City Football Club the following year, later selling it for a substantial profit. He entered self-imposed exile in 2008, relocating abroad but continuing to exert influence on Thai politics, a practise often criticized by his opponents as meddling. Despite his physical distance, the Shinawatra family’s political presence remained a constant factor in Thailand’s turbulent political landscape.
The Dynasty continues
The Shinawatra family’s political legacy extends beyond Thaksin. His children, most notably Paetongtarn Shinawatra, are increasingly prominent figures in Thai politics, suggesting the dynasty’s influence is set to continue for years to come. The family’s ability to adapt and remain relevant in a constantly shifting political surroundings is a testament to their political acumen and enduring appeal to a significant segment of the thai population.
