Global Childhood Cancer Awareness Month: Shining a Light of Hope
September marks the beginning of Global Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of childhood cancer treatment and research.
The Global Gold September Campaign
The Kansai Student American Football Association is participating in the Global Gold September Campaign, a worldwide event where iconic buildings, ruins, and natural heritage sites are lit up in gold to symbolize hope and support for children with cancer.
Everyone’s Gold September
In Japan, the event started in 2021, and in the Osaka/Kansai region, it began last year (2022) with the NPO Hospital Football Association as a co-organizer. This year, the Kansai Student American Football Association is carrying out a unique activity called “Everyone’s Gold September.”
This event encourages participants to use their smartphone flashlights to send a “ray of hope” and a “message of support” to children facing childhood cancer. You can join the movement by visiting the official website or Instagram page:

The Wave: A Symbol of Hope and Support
The American football field at the University of Iowa in the United States is adjacent to a children’s hospital, and during games, spectators wave their hands toward the children at halftime. At night games, they turn on and wave their smartphone flashlights, creating a “wave” of hope and support.
Join the Movement: Everyone’s Gold September
The Kansai Student American Football Association is hosting “Everyone’s Gold September” on September 3rd and 22nd. During halftime of the matches, spectators are encouraged to turn on their smartphone flashlights and wave them towards the night sky, sending a message of support to children with cancer.
Here’s how you can participate:
- At the end of halftime, the field lights will be turned off.
- Turn on the flashlight on your smartphone.
- Wave the “Light of Hope” (smartphone) towards the night sky and send your own message of support (“Good luck!” “I’m rooting for you!” etc.).
Join the Kansai Student American Football Association and the NPO Hospital Football Association in shining a light of hope and support for children with cancer.
