The Kid Rock-led “Rock the Country” music festival is facing a growing wave of artist departures as concerns mount over its increasingly visible ties to the MAGA movement. On Friday, Shinedown announced they would no longer be performing, joining Ludacris, Morgan Wade, and Carter Faith in pulling out of the touring festival.

In a statement posted on social media, Shinedown articulated a clear desire to remain a unifying force for their fanbase. “Shinedown is everyone’s band,” the message read. “We feel that we have been given a platform to bring all people together through the power of music and song. We have one BOSS, and We see everyone in the audience. Our band’s purpose is to unite, not divide. We have made the decision that we will not be playing the Rock the Country Festival. We know this decision will create differences of opinion. But we do not want to participate in something we believe will create further division. And to our fans, thank you for supporting and believing in us. We love and appreciate you always.”

The withdrawals come after Kid Rock, a key investor in the festival, explicitly framed the event as a gathering for “hard-working, God-fearing patriots” in promotional materials. He stated that the 2026 edition, coinciding with America’s 250th anniversary, would be “a place for… patriots to gather as one and celebrate freedom.” This rhetoric, coupled with reports of political messaging at previous events, has clearly made some artists uncomfortable.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that the Anderson, South Carolina, date of the festival has been officially canceled, citing “unforeseen circumstances.” Shinedown, Creed, Ludacris, Gretchen Wilson, and Lakeview were all scheduled to perform at that particular stop, and their names have since been removed from the festival’s website. County Administrator Rusty Burns assured the community that additional events are in the works, emphasizing a commitment to “high quality arts and entertainment.”

While the festival operated with less controversy in 2024, headlined by Nickelback and Kid Rock, this year’s iteration has drawn significant scrutiny. The involvement of Gavin Adcock, who reportedly used a previous festival platform to criticize President Joe Biden, and a video message from Donald Trump introducing Kid Rock at concerts, have fueled the perception of a politically charged event. The festival’s artwork, billing it as “A Festival for the People” and “Celebrating 250 years of Freedom,” further reinforces this image.

The situation surrounding Creed is currently unclear. A representative for the band told Rolling Stone that they “had not been told anything” regarding their participation, despite their name still appearing on the festival’s lineup page. This ambiguity adds another layer of uncertainty to the festival’s future plans.

Despite the growing list of dropouts, the Rock the Country festival still boasts a substantial lineup, including Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, Jelly Roll, Brooks and Dunn, Miranda Lambert, and Hank Williams, Jr. Whether these artists will remain committed in the face of ongoing controversy remains to be seen.

Shinedown’s decision underscores a growing trend of artists carefully navigating the intersection of music and politics. The band’s statement, prioritizing unity and inclusivity, reflects a desire to avoid alienating fans across the political spectrum. This move comes as the band continues to promote their recent work, including the 2022 album Planet Zero and a series of stand-alone singles, such as “Searchlight,” released last November.

The fallout from these artist departures raises questions about the future of the Rock the Country festival and the potential impact on Kid Rock’s brand. The festival’s attempt to appeal to a specific political demographic appears to be backfiring, forcing organizers to grapple with the consequences of aligning themselves so overtly with a particular ideology. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the festival can salvage its reputation and maintain a viable lineup.
