pakistan and Bangladesh Explore Deeper Maritime Cooperation
Pakistan has proposed a important expansion of maritime ties with Bangladesh, aiming to foster greater collaboration in shipping, port development, and seafarer welfare. The initiative, presented on November 25, 2025, by Pakistan’s Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry during a meeting in London with Brigadier General Dr. M.Sakhawat Hussain, an advisor on shipping for Bangladesh, centers on a formal partnership between the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) and the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC).
A Multifaceted Partnership
The proposed cooperation encompasses several key areas. These include joint operations for container and bulk shipping, the implementation of technical training programs for maritime professionals, and enhanced collaboration on maritime safety standards and the development of skilled seafarers. facilitating reciprocal port calls and strengthening diplomatic and technical exchanges at senior levels are also central to the proposal.
Pakistan is actively seeking to leverage international platforms like the International Maritime Association (IMO) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) to advance seafarer-related initiatives with Bangladesh, alongside engagement within regional maritime groups. This demonstrates a commitment to harmonizing standards and promoting best practices across the region.
Boosting Regional Trade and Logistics
Minister Chaudhry highlighted the increasing capacity of Karachi port Trust (KPT), citing ongoing modernization efforts and improved turnaround times as indicators of Pakistan’s readiness to support increased regional trade. He emphasized that closer port-to-port collaboration has the potential to alleviate logistical bottlenecks, streamline supply chains, and unlock new commercial opportunities throughout South Asia.
Formalizing Dialog for Sustained Progress
recognizing the need for a structured framework for ongoing discussions, both sides agreed to explore the launch of a Pakistan-Bangladesh Maritime Dialogue. This dialogue would serve as a dedicated platform to address critical issues such as port development strategies, shipping sector cooperation, the sustainable development of the blue economy, fisheries management, and other emerging challenges in the maritime domain.
This initiative signals a proactive approach by Pakistan to strengthen economic ties with Bangladesh through enhanced maritime connectivity and cooperation, positioning both nations to benefit from increased trade and regional integration.
