Shock in Livonia: Wrestling Coach Dave Chiola Fired After 24 Years
Coach Fired from Livonia Public Schools Wrestling Team
The wrestling community in Livonia, Michigan, is in shock over the sudden firing of Coach Dave Chiola. Chiola had been a coach for Livonia Public Schools for 24 years and was highly respected.
As the wrestling season begins, students like Miles Kwiatkowski are left disappointed. Kwiatkowski, 17, said, “Just know that I don’t get to finish off my senior year with Coach Chiola.” He praised Chiola, stating he has significantly contributed to the program’s success, which includes over 400 wins, 18 city championships, and 17 district titles.
Kwiatkowski expressed confusion about the decision, noting, “He didn’t do anything. There are no complaints from the parents, no complaints from other students.” An email sent on November 1 informed the wrestling community about the termination, stating Chiola fell short of accountability and expectations.
Angela Kwiatkowski, Miles’ mother, felt angry upon reading the email. She questioned what expectations had changed after 24 years and stated, “It feels like a judgment on his character.”
Chiola learned of his termination just over a week before the season. He explained that his dismissal may relate to a conversation with the athletic director about a student athlete who is transgender. Chiola emphasized he did not say anything derogatory.
Livonia Public Schools issued a statement denying that the termination involved the handling of a transgender student athlete. They insisted that social media narratives misrepresent the situation.
Many in the wrestling community plan to voice their support for Coach Chiola at an upcoming school board meeting, seeking an apology from the district.
