Shock Move: Szczesny Eyes Barcelona Switch, Ending Retirement Plans
Wojciech Szczesny Weighs Barcelona Move After Marc-Andre ter Stegen Injury
Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is contemplating a return to professional football, with a potential move to Barcelona on the cards. This development comes after German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a serious knee injury, leaving the Spanish club in need of a reliable goalkeeper.
Szczesny, a 34-year-old former Arsenal, Juventus, and Poland goalkeeper, had announced his retirement last month. However, the opportunity to join one of the world’s biggest clubs has seemingly tempted him to reconsider his decision.
“Barcelona is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and the offer is very tempting,” Szczesny revealed in an interview with Spanish newspaper Sport. “I understand the difficult position Barcelona are in after Ter Stegen’s injury, and it would be disrespectful for me not to consider this option.”
According to reports from Sport and Mundo Deportivo, Szczesny is set to undergo a medical examination by Barcelona on Thursday. This move could potentially pave the way for his return to professional football.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee during Barcelona’s 5-1 win over Villarreal. The German goalkeeper underwent surgery and is expected to be out of action for several months.
In the wake of Ter Stegen’s injury, Inaki Pena has taken over as the starting goalkeeper. However, with Pena being the only goalkeeper in Barcelona’s first team, club officials are exploring alternative options. These include promoting a goalkeeper from the club’s academy (La Masia) or signing a goalkeeper whose contract has expired, such as Szczesny or former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
German coach Hansi Flick expressed his trust in Inaki Pena, stating, “We trust Inaki, but I will discuss with the administration what we will do.” As the situation unfolds, Szczesny’s potential move to Barcelona remains a topic of interest in the football world.
