US authorities have filed two weapons-related charges against a man suspected of attempting to target the life of former US President Donald Trump. According to court documents, a US Secret Service agent patrolling the grounds of the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida on Sunday evening, while Trump was playing, “saw a rifle coming out of the trees.” After the agent fired his shot at the weapon, a witness later saw a man identified as Ryan Wesley Roth fleeing the area. Roth fled in a vehicle and was later arrested by Martin County Sheriff’s Office officers.
Roth was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession and receipt of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. At a news conference, FBI Special Agent Jeffrey Veltri said the incident was being investigated “as an apparent assassination attempt on former President Trump,” and Veltri confirmed that the investigation was ongoing. Ronald Roe, acting director of the US Secret Service, said the suspect “had no view of the former president” and did not fire at Secret Service agents before fleeing the scene.
The incident has drawn attention to the safety and security of former US presidents. The Secret Service is responsible for protecting current and former presidents, vice presidents, and other senior officials. In a separate incident, billionaire Elon Musk sparked controversy with a social media post about the absence of an assassination attempt on US President Joe Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk’s post was criticized by both the left and the right, with some expressing concern that his words could incite violence against Biden and Harris.
The White House criticized Musk’s post, saying “Violence should only be condemned, not encouraged or joked about.” The Secret Service also acknowledged the post, stating that they are aware of the matter and investigate all threats related to the individuals they protect.
