Trump’s Claim on Undocumented Immigrants Sparks Controversy in Ohio

Local residents in Ohio reported witnessing four Haitian immigrants catching geese near a city park, sparking controversy over U.S. Republican presidential candidate Trump’s claim that undocumented immigrants were eating cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio.

According to newly disclosed recordings, just two weeks ago, local residents called 911 on their way to work to report that they witnessed four Haitian immigrants being seen near a city park with geese. The New York Post reported that The Federalist, an American online political magazine, obtained a recording of a call made by a Clark County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher who received a report of a crime, which seemed to support the claim.

The caller told the dispatcher: “I’m sitting here, driving on the trail, on my way to today’s job training, and I see a group of Haitians, about four people, all holding geese in their hands.” He said the group of two Haitians, two men and two women, drove away in a gray Toyota Tacoma truck, each holding a goose.

The influx of about 20,000 Haitian immigrants into the quiet city of Springfield over the past four years has stretched local resources to the point where city officials this summer wrote to Republican and Democratic U.S. Senators Tim Scott and Sherrod Brown, urging federal aid to ease their economic burden.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced on the 10th that the Ohio Highway Patrol would be dispatched to assist the Springfield police, and at the same time allocated $2.5 million to support the city’s overloaded medical system.

Residents attended a Springfield City Council meeting last month and shared horrifying accounts of immigrants harassing locals, leaving mattresses on front lawns and eating all four-legged animals.

Donald Trump talked about undocumented immigrants “eating people’s pets in the city” during a televised debate yesterday. “In Springfield, Ohio, they are eating dogs. Those people (undocumented immigrants) come into the city and they eat cats.”
