Shocking Diagnosis: The 5kg Fat Cell Tumor That Changed My Life Forever
Fat Cell Cancer: A Rare and Aggressive Disease
A middle-aged man’s 10-year battle with a mysterious lump on his thigh led to a shocking diagnosis: a 5-kilogram fat cell cancer tumor.
Dr. Arak Wongworachat, a surgeon at Walailak University Medical Center Hospital, shared the remarkable case on Facebook, highlighting the importance of seeking medical attention for unusual lumps or growths.
The patient had first noticed the lump on his right thigh about 10 years ago and had undergone surgery at a hospital in Bangkok. However, the lump grew back, and the patient was hesitant to seek further treatment due to concerns about cost and convenience.
As the lump continued to grow, it began to affect the patient’s daily life, making it difficult for him to walk or wear long pants. Eventually, the patient sought treatment at Walailak University Medical Center Hospital, where Dr. Arak and his team suspected that the lump was a type of cancer called liposarcoma.
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan confirmed the diagnosis, and the patient underwent surgery to remove the tumor. The surgery was successful, and the tumor was found to be larger than 30 centimeters and weighed almost 5 kilograms.
What is Liposarcoma?
Liposarcoma is a rare type of cancer that occurs when fat cells grow and divide uncontrollably. It is classified as a connective tissue tumor and can occur in any part of the body, but is most commonly found in the thighs, hip bones, and retroperitoneal cavity.
According to the National Cancer Institute, liposarcoma is a rare disease, with only about 2.5 cases per million people diagnosed each year. It is more common in middle-aged people, with men being slightly more likely to develop the disease than women.
Importance of Early Detection
Dr. Arak emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention if an unusual lump or growth is detected. Early detection and treatment can significantly improve outcomes for patients with liposarcoma.
If you notice an abnormal lump or growth, especially one that continues to grow or is accompanied by other symptoms, consult a doctor immediately. A prompt diagnosis and treatment can make a significant difference in the effectiveness of treatment.
