Gerardo Martino Resigns as Barcelona Coach
Argentine Gerardo Martino has stepped down as Barcelona coach after failing to retain the Spanish league title. The decision comes after a 1-1 draw with hosts Atletico Madrid in the final match of the season.
Martino, who joined the Catalan club last July, announced his resignation, stating, “I want to announce that, by mutual agreement with the club, we are no longer the coach of Barcelona.” This decision marks the end of his tenure at the club, which lasted just over a season.
Martino’s resignation follows a disappointing season for Barcelona, who ended the season without any major titles. The team lost to arch-rivals Real Madrid in the cup final and was knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Atletico Madrid.
Gerardo Martino’s coaching career has been marked by several successes, including four Argentinian league titles with Libertad and Ciro Porteno. He also won the South American Coach of the Year award in 2007 while overseeing the Paraguay national team.
Under Martino’s leadership, Paraguay reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup, where they lost to Spain. The team also reached the 2011 Copa America final before Martino left to join Newell’s Old Boys.
Martino’s departure from Barcelona marks the end of his first European coaching experience. The club will now be looking for a new coach to lead them to success in the upcoming season.
