Controversy Surrounds Viral Video of Woman Claiming Divine Intervention During Federal Investigation
A Testimony of Faith or Fabrication?
A recent viral video featuring a woman claiming to be part of the ‘God’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministry’ in Lagos has sparked widespread controversy. The woman alleged that she received divine intervention during a federal investigation, which has drawn both cheers and condemnation from the public.
The Testimony
According to the woman, she was taking a military promotion assessment that consisted of 50 questions, 40 of which were related to job knowledge and 10 were related to current affairs. One of the questions asked candidates to list 10 French-speaking countries and their capitals. The woman claimed that no one knew the answer to this question, so she took a piece of paper and declared, “I am the chosen one! This question, who are you? Where is the God of the pastor’s power?” Suddenly, an old man in white appeared next to her and dictated the answers.
Backlash from Religious Leaders
Bishop Stephen Adegbite, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Lagos branch, expressed disappointment that the testimony was even allowed into the church, describing it as fabricated. He stressed that God’s help does not come in the form of miraculous test answers, but through effort and faith. “God doesn’t work like that,” Adegbite said. “There is no shortcut to success in life other than hard work and trust in God. This kind of testimony should not be accepted by any church.”
Criticism of Church Leaders
Adegbite also warned that such stories would undermine the credibility of religious institutions, criticizing church leaders for failing to review the testimonies before sharing them publicly. “Before sharing a testimony with the congregation, you should carefully examine it. If the testimony is suitable only for monkeys, you should tell it to monkeys, not to people,” he said.
A History of Controversy
This isn’t the first time that testimony from The Lord’s Chosen Ministry has sparked public debate. Previous viral videos have featured members claiming miraculous encounters, including one where a man said a lion saved him from a kidnapper and another who claimed bullets can’t penetrate the skull. Adegbite dismissed the claims as false, questioning whether anyone could replicate such a miracle under controlled conditions.
Response from The Lord’s Chosen Ministry
In response to the backlash, Pastor Chidi Lewis, director of communications and media for The Lord’s Chosen Ministry, claimed the video was doctored to discredit the church. He argued that the church does not censor the testimony of its members, because it believes that its members should be free to tell the truth, even if that truth comes from a dream. “We don’t tell people what to say. If they do give testimony, we give them a platform to share it as they wish. The church is not swayed by online criticism,” Lewis added.
A Call to Action
Despite the rising anger, the controversy has prompted the Lagos CAN chapter to announce a meeting to address the issue and other concerning testimony. Bishop Adegbite confirmed the association plans to take a firm stance on what he described as “The madness going on among Pentecostal pastors.”
