Benin’s Cheetahs Plummet in Latest FIFA Rankings

The Benin national football team, also known as the Cheetahs, has experienced a significant drop in the latest FIFA rankings, published on October 24, 2024. Under the guidance of coach Gernot Rohr, the team has lost points both continentally and globally.

In the October FIFA rankings, the Cheetahs of Benin now occupy 21st place in Africa and 95th place in the world. This decline was predicted by recent projections, which suggested that the team would drop from 89th to 95th place globally. The team’s overall ranking has also suffered, falling from 18th to 21st place.

Despite a victory against Rwanda in the first leg of the CAN 2025 qualifiers, Benin ultimately lost to Kigali (1-2) in the return leg on the 4th day of qualifying. This defeat likely contributed to the team’s dramatic drop in the rankings. The players are now aware of what they need to do to improve their ranking and secure a spot in the next edition of the African football tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco.
