Shocking Tactics: The Dark Side of China’s Corporate Firings Exposed
Chinese Companies Use Underhanded Tactics to Fire Employees Without Severance Pay
A recent wave of layoffs in China has led to companies resorting to deceitful methods to fire employees without providing severance pay, sparking widespread outrage and concern for workers’ rights.
Amid the economic downturn, many Chinese companies are facing significant losses or downsizing, resulting in layoffs. However, some companies have adopted underhanded tactics to terminate employees without paying severance pay, prompting public condemnation.
A notable case involved the Wuhan Zhongxin Design Institute in Hubei Province, where the company planned to lay off hundreds of employees, primarily those with over 10 years of experience. To avoid paying substantial severance pay, the company’s management devised a plan to organize entertainment and relaxation activities for employees, which included illicit services such as prostitution at karaoke bars or gambling.
After the employees fell into the trap, the senior manager reported their actions to the board of directors, resulting in the termination of over 200 employees without compensation or severance pay. Many employees had participated in the activities, believing they were company-wide social events, and some even intentionally lost money while gambling to maintain a good relationship with their superiors, only to later realize they had fallen into the trap.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation, with many expressing concern that employees fired in this manner would face difficulties finding new jobs, particularly in large companies or when applying for civil service positions.
This incident is not an isolated case, as other companies have employed similar tactics, such as abruptly firing employees with a criminal record within the last five years or digging through an employee’s past to find a reason for termination.
Some companies have also used fake recruitment tricks to deceive employees into quitting. A person who experienced this situation shared that they were almost fooled by an attractive job offer from a large company but discovered the plot in time.
These incidents have sparked public anger and concern about toxic and unethical working environments in some companies. Many have called for stronger measures to protect workers’ rights, reminding employees to be extremely vigilant in the workplace and not to completely trust anyone.
