Saad al-Saghir’s Arrest: A New Development in the Case
Renowned Egyptian singer Saad al-Saghir has been at the center of a recent controversy after being arrested at Cairo airport with 9 packages of e-cigarettes and marijuana.
In a recent update, the Public Prosecution in Noja, Cairo, has suspended Saad al-Saghir for 4 days for investigation. He has been ordered to submit to forensic medicine, where a sample of his blood will be drawn and analyzed to determine the levels of drug use.
What Did Saad al-Saghir Say?
During the investigation, Saad al-Saghir claimed that he could not read or write in English and was unaware that the seized items were forbidden to circulate. This statement has been reported by local Egyptian media outlets.
Saad al-Saghir was arrested by Egyptian security services at Cairo airport upon his return from a concert in the United States. The charges against him include possession of drugs.
Security services discovered marijuana oil and electronic cigarettes, listed in the drug list, on the Egyptian popular singer at Cairo airport.
As a result, the Egyptian police at Cairo International Airport wrote a report on the incident, and the artist Saad al-Saghir was sent to public prosecution for investigation.
A Similar Incident with Mena Shalabi
Saad al-Saghir’s case is not the first of its kind involving an artistic figure in Egypt. A similar incident occurred two years ago with the artist Mena Shalaby.
Shalaby was arriving from the Netherlands at the time and was found in possession of goods containing prohibited drugs in Egypt. She was arrested and referred for investigation and public prosecution.
The matter eventually reached the judiciary, where the first instance court sentenced Mena Shalaby to one year in prison and fined her 10,000 Egyptian pounds. The execution of the sentence was suspended for 3 years last May.
The case of the Egyptian artist sparked controversy on social media platforms between her defenders and opponents. The Syndicate of Egypt’s acting profession issued a statement that everyone “respects the privacy of its members and does not enter into their symptoms.”
Egyptian actress Mena Shalaby was among the nominees for the International Emmy Award for a dramatic work entitled “A Friday Every Week”.
In 2019, Shalaby won the “Fatein Hamama” appreciation award at the Cairo Film Festival for her artistic career, which includes more than 60 works in cinema, drama, and radio.
