A lawsuit alleges that Shohei Ohtani’s agent, Nez Balelo, strong-armed developers of a luxury Hawaiian resort, The Vista at Mauna Kea, leading to the firing of key partners and jeopardizing a $200 million project. the suit claims Balelo prioritized his relationship with Ohtani over contractual obligations, ultimately stripping the original developers of their work.
Developers Sue Over Alleged Betrayal in Ohtani-Linked Resort Deal
Developers Hayes and Matsumoto, along with their company Kingsbarn, are suing, alleging that Balelo’s actions led to their removal from the project and significant financial losses. The lawsuit paints a picture of a partnership soured by Balelo’s demands and Kingsbarn’s willingness to concede to them, even at the expense of its original partners.
The Vista at Mauna Kea: A Project Built Around Ohtani’s Star Power
The Vista at Mauna Kea Resort was envisioned as a collection of 14 luxury residences, heavily marketed around its connection to baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani. Investment materials prominently featured Ohtani, dubbing him “Japan’s Babe ruth” and the “1st Resident,” placing him above even the renowned Mauna Kea Resort and Hapuna Beach in promotional materials. Ohtani had committed to purchasing a residence and constructing a personal training facility at the resort.
The developers secured an endorsement deal with Ohtani in 2023, believing his involvement would be a “bold marketing strategy” to attract the Japanese luxury vacation home market. Brochures explicitly stated Ohtani’s homeownership would “have a significant impact on the global exposure of the project and expect to accelerate the pace of sales.” The partnership was projected to generate millions in profit for Hayes and Matsumoto through construction management fees and broker commissions.
From Partnership to Power Struggle: Balelo’s Alleged Interference
According to the lawsuit, Nez Balelo “quickly became a disruptive force,” allegedly threatening to withdraw Ohtani’s endorsement if Kingsbarn didn’t meet his demands. The suit claims Kingsbarn increasingly prioritized maintaining its relationship with Ohtani over its contractual obligations to Hayes and Matsumoto.
“Kingsbarn began capitulating to Balelo’s every whim,” the lawsuit states. “over time, it became increasingly obvious that Kingsbarn was more concerned about preserving its relationship with Otani than honoring its obligations to its business partners.”
“Coordinated Ambush”: Developers Fired Amidst Agent’s Demands
Last month, Hayes and Matsumoto were abruptly fired by Kingsbarn in what the lawsuit describes as a “coordinated ambush.” During a call, Kingsbarn allegedly admitted the terminations were made solely to appease Balelo. The developers now stand to lose millions in projected earnings.
“Defendants must be held accountable for their actions, not shielded by fame or behind-the-scenes agents acting with impunity,” the lawsuit asserts. “Plaintiffs bring this suit to expose Defendants’ misconduct and to ensure that the rules of contract, fair dealing, and accountability apply equally to all – celebrity or not.”
Ohtani, who signed a record $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers and led the team to the 2024 World Series, has not commented on the lawsuit. The case raises questions about the influence of agents and the potential for celebrity endorsements to overshadow contractual agreements.
