Shooting Aftermath: Grieving Families Demand Answers in North Point Tragedy, Police Insist ‘Code Compliance
Man Suffering from Emotional Illness Shot by Police in North Point
A 38-year-old man named Li, who suffered from emotional illness, attacked his mother and wife last Sunday (15th) in North Point. When the police arrived at the scene, he rushed towards the police with a kitchen knife and scissors. Despite being warned, he failed to stop, and was shot in the chest, resulting in his death at the hospital.
Li’s wife expressed regret over reporting the crime, stating that she had hoped the police would help her husband, not kill him. She questioned why the police officer did not aim for her husband’s hands, feet, or stomach, and why pepper spray or negotiation experts were not used. She also claimed that her husband was not violent and had never used a knife before.
Li’s brother also questioned the police officer’s decision to shoot, stating that there was no danger to his mother and brother-in-law in the room at the time. He believed that the police officer had other options, such as using shields or seeking help from other officers. He has filed a complaint with the Complaints Against Police Office and is seeking justice for his brother.
The police have expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased and have stated that the incident is being thoroughly investigated. According to preliminary investigations, the police officer’s decision to fire during the incident complied with relevant police rules. The police have also stated that they attach great importance to this case and will submit an investigation report to the Coroner’s Court.
Director-General of Police Siau Wai-yi has also extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and the injured. He stated that the deceased was armed with scissors and a kitchen knife, and that the police officer had to act decisively to stop him. He emphasized that the police have strict internal rules on the use of firearms and that officers receive regular training on their use.
The incident has raised questions about the use of force by police officers and the need for alternative methods to de-escalate situations. The family of the deceased is seeking justice and an apology from the police.
