Woman Remanded in Custody After String of Thefts and Hazardous Driving

A woman has been remanded in custody following a series of thefts and a dangerous driving incident. The court heard how the accused, McKeown, attempted to evade authorities after being stopped by a manager.
the Incident Unfolds
The court was presented with details of McKeown’s actions on May 23rd. After leaving a store, she attempted to drive away. Though, she was intercepted by a manager.Following a conversation, McKeown initially appeared to pull over but then proceeded to cut across multiple lanes of traffic at high speed.
Later that same day, officers stopped McKeown while she was driving a different BMW. A search of the vehicle revealed six “security de-tagging hooks.” Despite this revelation, she was permitted to leave at the time.
Further offenses and Admission
The court heard that further similar thefts occured at a Poundland store in Ballymena. McKeown was subsequently arrested at her home on Wednesday. Upon her arrest, she admitted to the thefts and the driving offense.
Bail Request and mental Health Background
During a bail application, McKeown’s defence counsel, Craig Patton, revealed that she had previously been diagnosed with kleptomania, although this diagnosis has sence been rescinded. Mr. Patton emphasized that there was a “important mental health background” and suggested that conditions could be put in place to address the police‘s concerns.
However, District Judge Nigel Broderick disagreed with the defence’s submission.
Judge’s Decision and future Appearance
District Judge Nigel Broderick decided to remand McKeown into custody. He stated, “in my view, there is a high risk of reoffending and I am not satisfied that the imposition of conditions will address those risks.”
McKeown is scheduled to appear in court again on August 7th.
