We sat down with Coach Sarah Thompson to discuss the team’s performance, Shuflit’s standout race, and what lies ahead for the athletes.
Interviewer: Coach Thompson, congratulations on the team’s performance at the NCAA West Regional! How do you feel about Will Shuflit’s fifth-place finish and his qualification for the national championships?
Coach Thompson: Thank you! We’re extremely proud of Will. Finishing fifth in such a competitive field is remarkable, especially when you consider that he achieved a personal-best time of 24:15.7. His hard work and dedication really paid off, and it’s exciting to see him qualify for the national championships. It’s a testament to both his talent and the commitment of our entire coaching staff.
Interviewer: The team finished fifth overall. How did you assess the overall performance of the athletes, particularly Axel Klomparens and the newcomers like Vincent Mangat, Rabbit Barnes, and Huck Whittemore?
Coach Thompson: I think the entire team performed admirably. Axel’s 17th place and all-region honors speak volumes to his capabilities as a junior. He consistently pushes himself and contributes to our team dynamic. Our freshmen, Vincent and Diego, showed promising potential, with Vincent finishing 30th. Rabbit and Huck also performed solidly, with Huck scoring for the team. Having a mix of upperclassmen and newcomers inspires a competitive atmosphere that we hope will continue as we head into the national championships.
Interviewer: Colorado College scored 138 points and placed behind Pomona-Pitzer, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, George Fox, and UC Santa Cruz. Given that context, what areas do you think the team can focus on to improve for the national meet?
Coach Thompson: Each race is a learning experience. While we are satisfied with our fifth-place finish, we will certainly analyze our performance. Strategic pacing, developing tougher finishes, and enhancing our teamwork in the final stretches of the races are areas we can improve upon. We’ll also focus on mental preparation as we gear up for nationals.
Interviewer: Looking ahead to the NCAA Division III National Championship in Terre Haute, Indiana, what are your expectations for the team?
Coach Thompson: Expectations are always balanced with the understanding that every race is unpredictable. We want to approach the national meet with confidence, knowing that we have the talent to compete with the best. Our primary goal is to perform at our highest level and support each other out there. Every athlete has the potential to achieve their personal best, and I believe the team will rise to the occasion.
