Shut Down: Israeli Forces Raid Al Jazeera’s West Bank HQ, Issuing 45-Day Closure Order

Shut Down: Israeli Forces Raid Al Jazeera’s West Bank HQ, Issuing 45-Day Closure Order

September 24, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

Israeli Forces ⁢Storm Al‍ Jazeera Television Station in West Bank, Ordering Closure for ⁤45 Days

On‌ Monday, September 23, 2024, undercover and armed ‌Israeli forces attacked the offices of the Al Jazeera news station in the West Bank city of‌ Ramallah, ordering the immediate closure of the station for 45 days.

This latest attack is part of a long-standing feud between Arab⁢ television‍ and the government of Prime Minister Benjamin ‍Netanyahu, which ⁣has escalated during the Gaza war.

Since the⁤ war began ⁣on October 7, when Hamas attacked ‍Israel, Al Jazeera has continued ⁣to report‌ on the consequences of Israeli military operations, ⁣prompting the Israeli ⁤military to accuse reporters of ties to Hamas and the Islamic Jihad group.

Al Jazeera has vehemently denied these ‍accusations, stating that Israel has consistently targeted its workers in the Gaza Strip.

Four Al Jazeera journalists have⁣ been killed since the ‌war ‌in Gaza began, and the network’s offices in the territory were bombed ‌and damaged.

The Israeli army claims that the⁢ press office in Ramallah was closed for “encouraging and supporting terrorist activities,” deeming Al Jazeera’s broadcasts a danger to Israel’s security.

Al Jazeera Responds to the Attack

Al Jazeera has condemned the Israeli attack as an “act of terror” and “illegal actions,” stating that it⁤ is an attack ⁢on media freedom.

During the raid, which was broadcast ⁢live, an‌ Israeli soldier informed Walid al-Omari, head of Al Jazeera’s West‍ Bank office, that the court had ordered the office to be closed for 45⁤ days.

Al-Omari responded, “Tackling‍ journalists like this is often trying to erase the truth and prevent⁤ people from hearing it.”

International Condemnation

The Palestinian‌ Foreign Ministry has condemned ‌the‌ Israeli operation as a “terrorist attack” and a “serious breach of media‌ freedom.”

Mohammad Abu al-Rub, director of ⁣the media office in the Palestinian government,‌ stated that the closure of Al Jazeera⁣ confirms the Israeli ‍occupation’s efforts to prevent the media from‌ covering crimes against Palestinians.

The Foreign Press Association in Israel and the‌ Palestinian Territories has expressed concern about the increase in violence and called on Israel to⁤ reconsider⁢ the move.

The Committee to Protect Journalists⁤ (CPJ) has also called on the Israeli authorities‍ to “stop harassing” Al ‌Jazeera, stating that ⁣Israel’s efforts to censor the network undermine the public’s right to access information about the⁤ war.

Impact ⁣on Journalism

The closure of ⁢the Al Jazeera office‍ in the West ⁢Bank‌ is not expected to affect broadcasts from the territory or the Gaza Strip, as the network continues to report on the war through other channels.

Nida Ibrahim, a reporter for Al Jazeera, stated that the closure of the network’s offices in the West Bank is not surprising, given previous⁤ bans on news⁢ reporting within Israel.

The ‌Hamas media office in‌ Gaza has condemned the⁣ attack, declaring it a “deafening scandal and clear steps against the freedom of the press.”

Humanitarian Crisis

The conflict has ⁣resulted in ⁤significant loss of life, with 1,205 deaths on the Israeli side, ⁢including hostages who died while in captivity.

Israel’s counteroffensive has resulted in at ⁢least 41,431 deaths in the Gaza‌ Strip, according to figures provided by the territory’s⁢ Ministry ‍of Health and ⁤accepted by the United Nations ⁤as reliable.
