Sickfluencers Boost Disability Claims: How Social Media Guides Benefit Seekers

Sickfluencers Boost Disability Claims: How Social Media Guides Benefit Seekers

November 30, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

Social Media Influencers and Disability Benefits

Social media influencers are helping many people with their disability claims. Over 15,000 individuals receive approvals for long-term sickness and disability payments every week.

These influencers, often called “sickfluencers,” use platforms like YouTube and TikTok to give advice on how to secure disability benefits. Their videos attract millions of views. They provide guidance on scoring criteria for assessments and suggest effective keywords to use.

In 2023, 3.3 million people claimed disability benefits, an increase of 1 million since 2019. This surge has placed pressure on the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), which now sees over 3,000 approvals per working day. The number of claimants is expected to exceed 4 million soon.

Financially, sickness benefits could cost £100 billion by the decade’s end, more than the budgets for schools, police, and courts combined. This amount includes both new claims and renewals.

YouTuber Charlie Anderson has gained attention with her video “Unlock the secret steps for winning your Pip claims,” which has received 378,000 views. She claims a 100% success rate by using strategies to score points in the benefits assessment process. Anderson offers templates and personal sessions for a fee.

Other influencers, like Liz Jones, known as the “Pip angel,” provide guides for specific claims, such as those for depression. Critics worry that this trend may lead to misuse of the benefits system. Some former assessors express concerns about valid claims being overshadowed by fraudulent ones.

Despite skepticism, some argue these influencers offer necessary support in a complicated system. Disability charity Scope reports low fraud rates and emphasizes the importance of assistance for those with genuine disabilities.
