Cher shares insights from her life in Hollywood in her new memoir. The singer and actress, now 78, reflects on her long career and personal experiences. She has had a successful career with hit songs like “Believe” and memorable films such as Mask and The Witches of Eastwick.
In an interview with The Times, Cher reveals that she only disliked two directors: Peter Bogdanovich and Frank Oz. She stated that she got Oz fired from the film Mermaids because she felt he had a negative attitude towards her. Cher recalled, “He would go, ‘At least my wife loves me!’”
Cher spoke candidly about Bogdanovich as well, calling him an “asshole” and criticizing his treatment of women on set. She described a frustrating incident during the filming of Mask where he dismissed her suggestions and threatened her career.
Her memoir also addresses her turbulent relationship with her ex-husband Sonny Bono. During their divorce, record executive David Geffen reviewed Cher’s contract and found it severely restrictive. Cher learned that she had little control over her finances or career decisions. She expressed shock when Geffen explained the contract placed her in a position of involuntary servitude.
Overall, Cher’s memoir provides a candid look into her career, challenging relationships, and the struggles she faced behind the scenes in the entertainment industry.
