A vintage flip phone serves as the primary weapon and survival tool in Signal Veil, an upcoming psychological horror game developed by Time Hunters. The title made its appearance during Insider Gaming’s 28 Games Later Horror Showcase, featuring a protagonist named Aki who relies on her mother’s cell phone to fend off monsters.
Signal Veil Features Vintage Phone Combat
The game centers on Aki, a character with sleepy bruises under her eyes who must survive isolation in a terrifying environment. When pursued by fleshy monstrosities, she uses her vintage cell phone within a unique combat framework. Developer Time Hunters explained to Insider Gaming that they wanted to steer closer to psychological horror compared to traditional titles like Resident Evil.
Similar to the crackling radio found in the Silent Hill series, Aki’s phone shivers and hisses whenever a monster approaches. This audio design induces paranoia before physical encounters even begin. The title also incorporates a sanity system that ties Aki’s mental state directly to her physical actions during gameplay.
Sanity System Affects Combat Mechanics
As Aki’s mental state deteriorates, her fighting style shifts to become more desperate, aggressive, and messy. The tiny phone functions as a blunt instrument capable of knocking enemies’ heads around. Players can also utilize the device’s camera flash to stun adversaries, leaving them vulnerable to a parry.
Time Hunters noted that they favor games featuring parry mechanics, which led them to experiment with phone-based defense. Developers stated in the Insider Gaming interview, It was one of those ideas that sounded strange at first, but once we tried it, we loved it.
Signal Veil currently lacks a confirmed release date, though the title is available for users to wishlist on Steam.
