AVALON, Calif. (AP) ​— The Catalina Museum of⁢ Art and History will host its 38th annual Avalon Silent Film Showcase, a long-standing tribute to silent film, May 16-17, 2025.The two-day event features ⁣screenings of rare ‌films, accompanied by live music‍ and commentary from film experts, at two locations in Avalon.

May 16:⁢ “Creature from the black Lagoon” in 3-D

The showcase ⁣begins ⁣May 16 with an outdoor screening of “Creature ⁣from the Black Lagoon” (1954) at the Ackerman ⁢family Amphitheater of the Catalina Museum. The Global Pictures classic will be presented in 3-D.

film ‌historian Eric Kurland ⁤will provide context​ for the film with rarely seen production photos and ⁢historical background. Admission‍ includes complimentary⁢ 3-D glasses.

May 17: ⁢”The Phantom of the Opera” at the Avalon Casino Theatre

On ⁢May 17, the event moves to the ⁣historic Avalon Casino Theatre, an ⁤Art Deco landmark built in 1929. ‍The museum will present a screening of “The Phantom of the Opera” (1925), starring Lon Chaney, to commemorate the film’s 100th anniversary.
