Ireland Considers National Day of Solidarity for Gaza

Tánaiste Simon Harris is exploring the possibility of Ireland observing a national day of solidarity with the people of Gaza, a move that has garnered significant attention and support.
A Proposal for Collective Action
The initiative stems from a letter published in The Irish Times by Michael Cush, who proposed that the Irish government call for a national day of protest. Cush suggested that such a day, clearly framed as a condemnation of atrocities in Gaza and not an indictment of Israel’s right to self-determination or self-defense, could galvanize immense public participation.
“The Government has been brave and consistent in its condemnation of the atrocities in Gaza. But it has been frustrated, too,” Cush wrote. ”But, together, the Government and the people might be much more influential. If the Government were to call a national day of protest, making clear that it was a condemnation of atrocities in Gaza, not of Israel’s right to self-determination or self-defence, the turnout would likely be enormous.”
Harris Endorses the Idea
Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris has publicly acknowledged the proposal, describing it as a “sensible and a good idea.” In a post on his Instagram account, harris shared Cush’s letter, emphasizing ireland’s solidarity with the Palestinian people.
“We stand for human rights, for international law, for a two state solution, for aid to flow, for hostages to be released. We stand for peace. we stand for an end to genocide,” Harris stated. He further elaborated, “The suggestion for a national day or moment of solidarity made by Michael Cush in the letter above is sensible and a good idea. It could be powerful if many countries did it together. I will now talk to colleagues on how to make this happen.”
The Dire Humanitarian Situation in Gaza
The consideration of a national day of solidarity comes amidst a deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The World Food Program (WFP), the United Nations food agency, has reported alarming statistics this week.
Escalating Desperation and Malnutrition
According to the WFP, nearly a third of Gaza’s population is experiencing prolonged periods without food. The situation has reached “new and astounding levels of desperation.” The agency highlighted that 90,000 women and children are in urgent need of treatment for malnutrition. Furthermore, projections indicate that 470,000 individuals are expected to face “catastrophic hunger” between May and September of this year, underscoring the urgent need for international attention and action.
