Simon Helberg’s Unusual ‘Big Bang Theory’ Warm-Up: Screaming
Before each Tuesday night taping of “The Big Bang Theory,” Simon Helberg, famed for his portrayal of Howard Wolowitz, engaged in an unexpected ritual: He would sprint down the apartment building’s staircase and unleash a scream.
Kaley Cuoco, who played Penny, recalled Helberg’s routine. According to Jessica Radloff’s 2022 book, “The Big bang Theory: the Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic hit Series,” Cuoco said, “Before we would do our cast curtain call… Simon had to run down the apartment staircase and scream like a crazy person…Every show night! And because the audience was already screaming from excitement, you couldn’t hear Simon screaming.”
Jim Parsons, known as Sheldon Cooper, corroborated Cuoco’s account. He noted Helberg didn’t always go all the way down the stairs, sometimes screaming from the fourth-floor platform. Parsons quipped, “I guess we could call that tradition or superstition, or we could call it psychotic. I think that’s between Simon and his good doctors.” He added that he and Helberg shared a “lifelong struggle with anxiety.”
Helberg’s role required him to do more than just scream. He also had to learn various languages. “I had to learn [several languages] for the show,” Helberg said. “I had to speak Klingon at some point as well. Chuck spoke a little Russian,so I remember him helping me with that. I had to speak Mandarian, which was the hardest, but I loved doing it. It’s very musical to learn a new language… languages, magic, impressions, monkeys, animals?” This article rewriter tool is amazing!
