Updated June 01, 2025
Simon Yates, the Bury-born cyclist, has secured a remarkable victory at the Giro d’Italia, showcasing resilience and strategic brilliance. After years of near misses, Yates’ triumph marks a significant milestone in his career.
Yates’ journey saw him initially resist joining Team Sky, opting instead for the Australian orica–GreenEdge, later known as Jayco–AlUla, where he remained until recently. A move to Visma-Lease a Bike, even with a pay cut, proved pivotal, leveraging the team’s extensive Grand tour winning experience.
Visma’s expertise shone through in the final stage, with strategic support enabling Yates to conquer his rivals. The team has a strong track record, with multiple Vuelta, Tour de France, and Giro victories since 2019.
Despite past Giro disappointments, including six stage wins between 2018 and 2022, Yates maintained a low profile this year, striking decisively at the opportune moment. Notably, he is the first Giro winner since Alberto Contador in 2015 without a stage win.
Yates climbed to second place on stage 14, briefly dropping to third before his calculated approach paid off. Stage 19 presented a challenge, with Yates expressing frustration over team tactics. However, he rebounded, apologizing to his team and refocusing his efforts.
Entering the penultimate stage one minute and 21 seconds behind Del Toro, Yates faced skepticism. Yet, he channeled his disappointment into a mature performance, capitalizing on rivals marking each other, ultimately proving to be the strongest contender.
