Sinbad Returns: Comedian Makes Triumphant Stage Comeback After Stroke

Comedian Sinbad returned to the stage this week, marking a significant milestone in his recovery from a stroke he suffered in 2020. The 69-year-old performer held two stand-up shows at the Ice House Comedy Club in Pasadena, California, on April 29th and May 10th, representing his first traditional comedy sets in over five years.

Sinbad announced his return in a video shared online, stating, “I can’t walk! Since the stroke in 2020, I have not been on stage. I’m gonna get my feet wet… It’s just the beginning of me coming back.” The appearances follow years of intensive recovery after an ischemic stroke, caused by a blood clot traveling to his brain, required multiple surgeries and a lengthy rehabilitation process.

A Long Road Back

Born David Adkins, Sinbad rose to fame in the 1990s through stand-up comedy specials and television roles. He gained widespread recognition for his role as Coach Walter Oakes on the television series “A Different World,” which aired from 1987 to 1991, and for his family-friendly comedy routines.

His career was interrupted in October 2020 when he suffered the stroke. He spent months hospitalized and subsequently entered rehabilitation to relearn basic movements. Family updates during this period described a challenging journey, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy aimed at regaining his mobility.

Despite the difficulties, Sinbad remained optimistic about returning to performing, previously telling fans, “Miracles happen.” His recent stage appearances reflect this determination and follow a gradual return to public life, including virtual appearances and recent acting projects.

A Family Moment on Stage

The Pasadena shows held particular significance beyond marking his comeback. Sinbad’s daughter, Paige Bryan, opened for him at both performances, representing their first time performing together as comedians.

Bryan described the moment as deeply meaningful, noting that accessibility limitations during her father’s recovery had often prevented him from attending her shows. “Tonight, I’m opening for the man, the myth, the legend himself,” she wrote in a message shared online. “This is bigger than I can fully comprehend.” She added that many comedy clubs are not ADA accessible, hindering her father’s ability to attend her performances.

“Since starting comedy, my dad has only been able to watch me perform twice. Mainly due to the fact that MOST clubs are not ADA accessible so he literally can’t get in there.”
