Sindh senator Claims Unfair Treatment in Federal Funding
Updated June 16, 2025
Tensions are rising between Sindh and the federal government over budget allocations and control of development projects. The dispute follows protests by opposition lawmakers after Sindh’s budget unveiling last week.
Senator Quratulain Marri, a member of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), voiced concerns Monday that Sindh is being marginalized. She stated that the province is being “treated like a colony of the federation.” Her remarks came during a Senate Planning and Development Committee meeting, where members protested the exclusion of the Public Works Department (PWD) from key development initiatives.
Last week, Sindh chief Minister Shah Murad, whose PPP is a coalition partner in the federal government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), cautioned that his party might withhold support for the federal budget. His warning stemmed from Islamabad’s continued management of development schemes within Sindh, rather than transferring control to the provincial government.
Murad previously stated that Sindh was overlooked while other provinces received development funding alongside their budgets. He also noted the federal government’s decision to dissolve the PWD, which previously oversaw development projects across all provinces.
Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal had said that federal agencies decide which government, federal or provincial, they prefer to work with, and projects where distributed accordingly.
Marri countered that there was an agreement to allocate PWD projects to Sindh, a decision she said was made in the National economic Council. She lamented that Sindh is now the only province being excluded, a move that has sparked meaningful concern within the Sindh government.
”All provinces should be treated equally and be given control of projects,” Marri said.
What’s next
The Sindh government is expected to continue pressing its case for equitable treatment in federal funding and development project control. Further negotiations between provincial and federal officials are anticipated to resolve the ongoing dispute.
