Sindh Boosts Law Enforcement Budget Amid Security Focus
Updated June 14, 2025
KARACHI, Pakistan — The Sindh government is increasing its investment in provincial security, earmarking Rs179.7 billion for law and order in the 2025-26 fiscal year. This allocation covers security, law enforcement, and prisons across Sindh.
the new budget represents a 4.5% increase from last year’s Rs172 billion. A notable portion, Rs117 billion, is dedicated to the police, highlighting the government’s emphasis on addressing security challenges, including street crime, in the provincial capital.
Following a jailbreak earlier this month, where over 200 inmates escaped, the prisons budget will see a 20% rise, reaching Rs9.92 billion from Rs8.21 billion.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah addressed the budget, stating,”We have proposed the budget estimates of Rs179.7 billion for the next financial year for the security and law enforcement activities in Sindh.” He added,”Sindh police are being equipped with the resources, training, and reforms they need to meet today’s challenges.”
The government has allocated Rs200 million to the Provincial Intelligence Fusion & Threat Assessment Center (PIFTAC), a platform designed to collect intelligence from various law enforcement agencies. An additional Rs400 million will fund bulletproof vehicles to protect foreign nationals, especially Chinese engineers and delegates.
To enhance security on highways, the Sindh Police Highway Patrol will be established as a pilot project. The unit will deploy 1,200 personnel in 71 vehicles across 40 beats on major highways. Plans are underway to expand coverage to 2,153 kilometers of highways with 92 vehicles and 1,900 personnel.
Despite perceptions of rising street crime in Karachi, Shah cited data indicating a decline in criminal activities. He noted a 67% reduction in vehicle snatching and theft, and a 54% decrease in violent street robberies compared to the previous year.
Counter-terrorism measures remain a priority. In 2024, Sindh police arrested 210 terrorists from banned organizations and 42 this year. Four terrorists were killed during encounters with law enforcement.
Shah saeid, “Overall law and order situation in Sindh remained peaceful during the past year and efforts are underway to ensure effective control on crime.”
